Piazza Venezia

This is the center of ancient Rome. It's a quick walk from it to the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Piazza del Campidoglio, Capitoline Museum and Bocca della Verita (Mouth of the Truth). All of these places are important parts of the city's history and can take several hours each to see and appreciate. Overlooking the piazza is the Victorio Emanuele Monument to the country's first major king, which many compare to a huge wedding cake. This is the landmark visitors should use when exploring the area.
