Duration : 9 Hours
Our private shore excursion to Orvieto & Bagnoregio from Civitavecchia is the perfect tour for those interested in the wonders of ancient history and the delights of modern culinary tradition. These hilltop villages will take you on a fascinating trip into the Etruscan and Medieval past of Lazio, sure to be an astounding experience for all your senses.
Features of this day trip:
After leaving the port of Civitavecchia we’ll
drive along country roads through lush landscapes to Orvieto.
ORVIETO
Orvieto is perched on a plateau of volcanic
rock that was once an island in the sea that covered the Paglia valley
below. Here you will have time to
explore the Duomo, one of the finest cathedrals in Italy, a gem
of Gothic architecture with shimmering mosaics on the facade.
Now prepare for some time travel! You’ll cover 3000 years of history in an
hour-long tour of the underground city. In its
ancient passageways, winding tunnels, hidden rooms and Etruscan artifacts the
fascinating story unfolds.
Another important stop is St. Patrick's Well. The
well, over 200 feet deep, was commissioned by Pope Clement VII, who sought
refuge here during the Sack of Rome in 1527.
The most interesting feature of the well is the ingenious double set of
spiraling staircases, one for those going down and one for those going up,
which enabled citizens and their mules to fetch their water without encountering
oncoming “traffic”.
Of course, being on top of a rock, Orvieto has
many lookout points where you’ll get amazing views of the countryside.
BAGNOREGIO
How fun does it sound to visit a place
nicknamed the dying city? Well,
that’s the second part of our tour!
Established 2500 years ago by the Etruscans, Civita di Bagnoregio once occupied a strategic position for
trade. Over time, erosion, landslides,
earthquakes and floods had reduced the place to pretty much a ghost town. But recently, thanks to the beauty of the
hamlet and the novelty of being reachable only by a long, narrow footbridge,
Bagnoregio has become a tourist phenomenon that has pulled it back from the
brink of death.
Stroll the narrow streets lined with immaculate
stone houses, enjoy a glass of wine and a snack and marvel at the existence of
a place where time stopped hundreds of years ago.
On the way back to Civitavecchia catch the spectacular panorama of Lake Bolsena from Montefiasacone and visit the church
of S. Flaviano where the founder of the winery Est Est Est! is buried.
1. Is this tour private?
The tour is private, just for your party, however if you prefer to share your tour with other passengers to alleviate costs, you may find your travel companions to create your small group and divide the costs.
2. Is the driver also a guide?
Our English-speaking drivers are NOT licensed guides. In order to provide you with the best-in-class service, our English speaking driving guides have been trained to offer our clients a nice overview with information regarding the major highlights avoiding the expensive charges of hiring a private guide. Due to strict Italian laws & regulations that protect officially licensed guides, our driving guides can comment and explain the sights only from inside the vehicle but are not allowed to do so once they are outside the vehicle. They are regularly licensed instead to chauffeur the public. We highly recommend that you never book with any touring company that does not make this clear.

No, only a licensed guide is authorized to accompany you during the visit of sights. Our driver will drop you off close to the sights but will stay with the vehicle for the duration of your visit.
