MARSALA

When we think of Marsala we think of the dessert wine that bears its name, but Marsala is also renowned for something far more basic: salt

Marsala wine was discovered by an English trader John Woodhouse when he landed there in the late 18th Century.  The fortified wine, aged in casks, is similar to sherry, which was popular in England at the time.  It transported well thanks to its high alcohol content, was a hit in England, and Woodhouse returned to Sicily to set about mass producing it.  Marsala is characterized by a rich, smoky flavor that varies from sweet to dry.  You will have a chance to visit the oldest winemaker in the area, Cantine Pellegrino.

After the wine tasting, you will stroll through the ancient village and see the area where Garibaldi, the hero of Italian liberation and unification landed.

THE SALT PANS

At the sea salt flats between Marsala and Trapani, the extraction of salt from seawater still is still carried out following ancient traditions, which began about 2700 years ago with the Phoenicians.  The combination of hot winds from Africa, the shallow coastal waters, and the scorching Sicilian sun is perfect for the natural evaporation process that creates this highly prized salt.

The windmills, dating back to Medieval times, once served to pump seawater from one basin to another.  Today they are no longer in use but grace the environment as a romantic reminder of the past.

For an in-depth look at the whole history of the salt pans visit the Museo delle Sale (Salt Museum).

TRAPANI

Across from the Egadi Islands, in a beautiful spots, where the Tyhrennian Sea meets the Mediterranean, lies Trapani.  Renowned for its fine seafood and Sicilian cuisine, it also contains some lovely Baroque structures as well as the usual assortment of architecture that tells Sicily’s story of ever-changing civilizations.
