Duration : 9 Hours
This tour to Siena, San Gimignano & the Tuscan countryside has been designed for guests who have already seen the famous attractions and beauties of Florence and Pisa, and who are looking for a private shore excursion from Livorno that is truly wonderful but different.
Features of this day trip to Siena, San Gimignano & Tuscan Countryside:
After about 90 minutes of driving through the picturesque countryside Tuscany, you will arrive at San Gimignano, an enchanting medieval village that takes its name after Bishop Gimignano who saved the city from the barbarians.
San Gimignano has been called “the Medieval Manhattan” because of its majestic towers, some of which you can even climb for spectacular views of the territory. Besides the towers, San Gimignano will charm you with its beautiful stone buildings and Medieval architecture, stylish boutiques, and local products (especially the award-winning gelato!).
If you eat too much gelato, no worries! You can work off your ice cream by trekking up to the fortress. Once inside you’re likely to find musicians and artists enlivening the scene, and then you can climb even more stairs to get to the belvedere with jaw-dropping panoramas of the countryside all around.
For a less strenuous post-gelato activity, check out the frescoes in the churches of Santa Maria Assunta and Sant’Agostino, or take a stroll around the exterior of the town to admire the handsome ancient walls and city gates.
Siena is a place that should not be missed during a trip to Tuscany. Founded by Augustus around the time of the birth of Christ, the city became a wealthy and powerful rival of Florence during the late middle ages, still evidenced by the scale and splendor of its churches and public buildings.
Stroll the winding, narrow streets and visit Piazza del Campo, the grand, fan-shaped piazza where the annual spectacle of the palio horse race takes place. In the gorgeous shops you find beautiful clothing, shoes and leather goods, but mostly importantly typical Sienese treats! Turn your sweet tooth loose and you may very well spend your life savings on ricciarelli (amazingly gluten free), panforte, and cavallucci.
We can add a wine tasting or lunch at a winery if you like (should be arranged in advance). The wine region around San Gimignano is acclaimed for Vernaccia (white), and near Siena are many excellent denominations of world-famous Chianti, where not only the traditional reds are produced but also amazing Super-Tuscans.
