Features
of this day trip to Siena & San Gimignano en route from Rome to Florence:
As you transfer from Rome to Florence enjoy a
scenic drive through Lazio and the Tuscan countryside with your private driver.
SIENA
Our first stop will be Siena, without doubt, one
of Italy's most enchanting places. Its Medieval historic center is full of
majestic Gothic buildings, most notably Palazzo Pubblico in Piazza del Campo,
Siena’s main piazza.
Twice a year the Sienese celebrate their rich
medieval heritage with the palio, a fantastic horse race that takes place in this vast, shell-shaped
square, attracting spectators from around the world. It’s interesting that a city that allows
horses to run around its main piazza was the first Italian city to ban traffic
in its historical center, way back in 1965.
For more sensational monuments visit Siena’s
Duomo (cathedral), built in the 13th century.
Its green, pink and white marble exterior
is surpassed only by the striking black and white marble interior and the
exquisite inlaid marble floor.
If you prefer goodies to architecture,
rejoice! Siena is famous for all sorts
of sweet temptations. Do a taste test of ricciarelli (gluten
free), panforte, and cavallucci and see which one you like best.
SAN GIMIGNANO
In San Gimignano you’ll find more Medieval splendor, but of a different flavour. Called the “Medieval Manhattan” because of
its numerous towers, the city of the belle
torri rises imperiously above the vineyards that stretch away from it into
the lush countryside.
Besides the towers, San Gimignano will charm
you with its beautiful stone buildings and Medieval architecture, stylish
boutiques, and local products (especially the award-winning gelato!).
If you eat too much gelato, no worries!
You can work off your ice cream by trekking up to the fortress. Once
inside you’ll likely to find musicians and artists enlivening the scene, and
then you can climb even more stairs to get to the belvedere with jaw-dropping
panoramas of the countryside all around.
For a less strenuous post-gelato activity,
check out the frescoes in the churches of Santa Maria Assunta and
Sant’Agostino, or take a stroll around the exterior of the town to admire the
handsome ancient walls and city gates.
