What You’ll See

  • Segesta Temple (Ancient Greek Doric Temple)
  • One of Sicily’s best-preserved ancient temples, set in a dramatic landscape.
  • Segesta Theatre (panoramic views)
  • If you choose to visit the theatre, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding hills.
  • Erice (medieval hilltop town)
  • A charming stone town known for its winding lanes, scenic overlooks, and unique atmosphere.

SEGESTA
To reach the archeological site of Segesta, we’ll drive along the Gulf of Castellammare—an undeveloped stretch of coastline with unspoiled beaches and simple villages.

Segesta’s origins are mysterious, but the ancient Greek presence is unmistakable. The Doric temple (5th century BC) is remarkably well preserved, and its setting in the green countryside is truly enchanting.

You’ll also see the Greek amphitheatre, once seating around 4,000 spectators. It’s known for excellent acoustics and is still used for summer performances.

ERICE
Walking through Erice can feel like stepping into a fairy tale—especially when the town is wrapped in mist. Surrounded by cyclopean walls, Erice rises almost 2,500 feet above sea level, offering spectacular views on clear days.

Erice’s history stretches back through indigenous Sicilian peoples, Phoenicians, and later conquerors. In ancient times it was a sacred site, and today the Castle of Venus (built by the Normans between the 12th and 13th centuries) stands where a temple once existed.

Erice is also known for its many churches—about 60—especially the Chiesa Madre (built 1314) and San Giovanni Battista.

And if you have a sweet tooth, you’re in the right place: Erice is famous for pastries and cookies, with Maria Grammatico being the most celebrated name.
