  • Pickup/drop-off at your Rome accommodations
  • 30-min drive to the Castelli Romani area in air-conditioned vehicle
  • Ariccia
  • Genzano di Roma
  • Nemi
  • Castel Gandolfo
  • Frascati
  • Drive around Lake Albano and Lake Nemi
  • Local wine and traditional food products

The Castelli Romani (literally, Roman Castles), a collection of hilltop villages around Lake Albano and Lake Nemi, have always been synonymous with great food and simplicity.  In times gone by, the citizens of Rome would come here on the weekends, buying food along the way and enjoying it with local wine in a tavern.

Today the area is best known for Castel Gandolfo, where the traditional summer residence of the Pope is located, but there are many picturesque villages to visit, and the region is one of great natural beauty.

Our tour begins with a drive through lush farmlands and rolling hills dotted with handsome villas.  We will visit the following villages, each one with its own particular charm and food specialties.  If you like we can finish the day with a wine tasting

ARICCIA

Ariccia is an ancient place. it was part of the Latin League before the foundation of Rome.

In Renaissance times, some of the greatest architects of the period (Bernini among them) were responsible for the stately buildings that grace Piazza di Corte.

Around the corner from Piazza di Corte, stateliness bows out and informality takes center stage at the fraschette. In the tavern-like atmosphere of these casual eateries, you’ll have the chance to taste typical local products such as porchetta (a whole pig roasted with herbs), the great local bread and wine, and classic dishes such as spaghetti alla carbonara and pappardelle with wild boar.

Join Sharon and Marco in Ariccia for a little antipasto shock at the fraschette!

GENZANO DI ROMA

Genzano is best known for its bread, pane casareccio di Genzano, and for the Infiorata Festival.

During this event, the streets of Genzano are decorated with flowers arranged in mosaics, creating a spectacular floral carpet on the sloping pavement. This tradition goes back to the 17th century as part of the celebration of Corpus Domini.

NEMI

After going around Lake Nemi we will arrive at the village of Nemi.  The best-preserved town of the Castelli Romani, Nemi is enjoyed by simply walking around and immersing oneself in its country atmosphere. Here you will have a chance to taste Fragolino, a local liqueur made from the wild strawberries that have made the village noteworthy. These wild strawberries are also used to make jam and other delicacies.

CASTEL GANDOLFO

On the way to Castel Gandolfo we’ll drive around scenic Lake Albano, which is actually the flooded remains of two volcanic craters,  The placid town of Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope historically retreats in the summer to escape the heat of Rome, is packed with historic sites.  Take a short stroll in this lovely medieval town and shoot some photos of the panoramic views and the papal palace.

FRASCATI

Dominated by spectacular Villa Aldobrandini, Frascati is renowned not only for its wine production but also for the many villas that dot the landscape. These luxurious country houses, which came into vogue starting in the 16th Century, were built by popes, cardinals, and Roman nobility as status symbols and centres of social activity.

A wine tasting with snacks is optional (approx. 20-25 Euro per person).

Faq

1. Is this tour private?

The tour is private, just for your party.

2. Is the driver also a guide?

Our English-speaking drivers are NOT licensed guides. In order to provide you with the best-in-class service, our English-speaking driving guides have been trained to offer our clients a nice overview with information regarding the major highlights avoiding the expensive charges of hiring a private guide. Due to strict Italian laws & regulations that protect officially licensed guides, our driving guides can comment and explain the sights only from inside the vehicle but are not allowed to do so once they are outside the vehicle. They are regularly licensed instead to chauffeur the public. We highly recommend that you never book with any touring company that does not make this clear.

3. Does the driver go with us inside the monuments?

No, only a licensed guide is authorized to accompany you during the visit of sights. Our driver will drop you off close to the sights but will stay with the vehicle for the duration of your visit.

4. Does this tour include lunch and admission fees to sites?

Lunch and admission fees are not included in the rate. Please contact our office for pricing and reservations.

5. Does it include a guide?

A guide is not included either. Please contact our office for pricing and reservations.

6. What is the duration of the tour?

The duration of the tour is 7 hours, including pickup and drop off at the ship.

7. Is the itinerary flexible?

Our itineraries are completely flexible, and we will be happy to operate any changes to the original itinerary (within reason). Please contact our office with all the requests you may have so that we can better organize your day.

8. Is gratuity included in the price?

Tips are never included in our quotes. We think that a tip shouldn’t be included in the rate otherwise it would be a tax!!! Once in Italy do not feel as though you have to tip everyone because someone told you to. Tip only if you really liked the service. Tips are generally: 10% not bad 15 % great 20 % best tour in my life. Please report any abuse.
