ancient Roman commercial seaport and city.
According
to Rick Steves, Ostia Antica is “the most underappreciated sight in all of
Italy” that “offers thrills to rival Pompeii.” Yet Ostia remains uncrowded and
peaceful.
Situated at
the mouth (ostium in Latin) of the Tiber River, Ostia was founded in the 7th
Century BC. It grew into a naval base and the Empire’s prominent port. After
the fall of the Roman Empire, the port fell into disuse and was eventually
buried by silt, preserving the ruins brilliantly.
As you walk
among the ruins and tall Mediterranean pines, you’ll see ancient warehouses,
docks, fishmongers’ counters, taverns, houses, shops, baths, and temples. The
giant brick theatre is impressive and still used for concerts.
The small
but pleasant museum contains busts, sculptures, mosaics, pagan idols, and other
artifacts revealing Ostia’s rich history.
