On our private shore excursion from Giardini-Naxos (Taormina) to the Godfather towns Savoca & Forza d’Agro you will walk in the footsteps of The Godfather characters.  You will see some of the prettiest villages in Sicily and enjoy spectacular views.

Features of this day trip to the Godfather Towns:

  • Pickup at the cruise terminal
  • 35-min drive to Savoca in an air-conditioned vehicle
  • Magnificent panoramic views of the straits of Messina
  • Two of the prettiest villages in Sicily
  • Locations made famous by The Godfather movies
  • Local food specialties (especially granita)
  • Dropoff at the ship

After a short but scenic driving up the coast we will start the winding ascent to Savoca.

The Medieval hamlet of Savoca, nestled between two hills, is not only lovely but also contains many points of interest in addition to the obvious one made famous by The Godfather.  But we’ll start with those, seeing as that’s obviously the draw of this tour!

Located in a noble palazzo at the entrance of the village is Bar Vitelli, where Michael Corleone first meets his future father-in-law after being smitten by Apollonia.  Inside the bar, enjoy a lemon granita while you peruse the collection of local artisans' tools and photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola was filming.

The granita will give you a boost of energy for a walking tour of the village (mostly uphill).  You will pass by several very old churches, most notably the church of San Niccolò, where Michael and Apollonia were married.

Other interesting sites include the remains of Pentefur castle, where you can take in magnificent views of the valley, and the Capuchin convent, where mummies (really!) of prominent former citizens are at rest in the crypt.

Even higher above sea level is the village of Forza d’Agro, where time stopped in the Medieval era. Besides the stone-paved streets and traditional buildings, there are breathtaking vistas of the Straits of Messina and the Arab-Norman castle at Capo Sant'Alessio.

The 15th Century church of Sant’Agostino (also called Santissima Trinità) was a filming location used by Coppola.  It was the backdrop for Michael Corleone’s arrival in Sicily, and the scene in which young Vito Corleone is being pursued by a Mafia gang.  Put your runners back on; to get to the church you must climb more stairs to Piazza della Triade.  Before stepping into the piazza, one of the prettiest spots in the village and also where the Augustinian convent is located, you’ll first pass under the marvelous Catalan-Gothic arch, Arco Durazzesco.

For more Godfather shooting locations check out the Chiesa Madre (“mother church”, also called Santissima Annunziata), a Baroque church dating back to the 15th Century.

A relaxing, scenic drive along the Ionian coast takes you back to the ship.

1. Is this tour private?

The tour is private just for your party, however if you wish to join a tour and alleviate costs, please check with us our shared guaranteed excursion options

2. Is the driver also a guide?

Our English-speaking drivers are NOT licensed guides. In order to provide you with the best-in-class service, our English-speaking driving guides have been trained to offer our clients a nice overview with information regarding the major highlights avoiding the expensive charges of hiring a private guide. Due to strict Italian laws & regulations that protect officially licensed guides, our driving guides can comment and explain the sights only from inside the vehicle but are not allowed to do so once they are outside the vehicle. They are regularly licensed instead to chauffeur the public. We highly recommend that you never book with any touring company that does not make this clear.

3. Does the driver go with us inside the monuments?

No, only a licensed guide is authorized to accompany you during the visit of sights. Our driver will drop you off close to the sights but will stay with the vehicle for the duration of your visit.

4. Does this tour include lunch and admission fees to sites?

No tickets or lunch are included in the rate. Please contact our office for pricing and reservations.

5. Does it include a guide?

No guide is included either. Please contact our office for pricing and reservations.

6. What is the duration of the tour?

The duration of the tour is 7/9 hours, including pickup and drop off at the ship.

Our itineraries are completely flexible, and we will be happy to operate any changes to the original itinerary (within reason). Please contact our office with all the requests you may have so that we can better organize your day.

8. Do you guarantee the return to the ship on time?

In almost 30 years of business, we have never missed the ship that is why we have organized all itineraries to guarantee your return on time.

9. Is gratuity included in the price?

Tips are never included in our quotes. We think that a tip shouldn’t be included in the rate otherwise it would be a tax!!! Once in Italy do not feel as though you have to tip everyone because someone told you to. Tip only if you really liked the service. Tips are generally: 10% not bad 15 % great 20 % best tour in my life. Please report any abuse.
