Features of this day trip to Bolgheri, Volterra & the Tuscan countryside:
Welcome to the Etruscan Coast! This tour will take you to Volterra, where an ancient civilization called the Etruscans lived almost 3000 years ago, and to Bolgheri, a tiny hamlet brought to the world’s attention thanks to the Super Tuscan wine phenomenon.
VOLTERRA
On your way to Volterra let your eyes dance across the landscape; you will most certainly be spellbound! In pre-Roman times Volterra was one of the twelve main cities of the Etruscan confederation, sitting on a hilltop in the middle of the enchanting Tuscan countryside.
The Medieval town of Volterra, founded in
pre-Roman times by the ancient Etruscan civilization that once inhabited
central Italy, sits on a rocky plateau and is protected by medieval ramparts.
Even though Volterra is small there are lots of things to see.
In Piazza dei Priori you will admire the
symmetry and beauty of the square, and really feel that you have stepped back
in time as you gaze at the crenellated clock tower. If you’re crazy about
the Etruscans you will want to make a bee-line the
world-renowned Etruscan Museum. If you prefer Roman history, then the
Roman amphitheatre, which is in excellent shape.
If you were a fan of The Twilight series you
can run around and try to find locations made famous by the books, or maybe a
vampire or two. Art lovers will appreciate the fine frescoes in the
Church of San Francesco and the many exceptional works of art in the Pinacoteca. Shutterbugs will be snapping so many
shots they’ll be blessing the day digital cameras were invented.
Shoppers, you will love the boutiques and alabaster products. In case you didn’t know, Volterra is
known as the Alabaster Capital of the World! An authentic alabaster souvenir
would make a wonderful keepsake or gift from your visit.
BOLGHERI
In the Bolgheri wine region some of the best and most famous Italian wines are produced, as well as excellent olive oil, so get your taste buds ready!
If you want to hug an Italian tree, you’ll get your chance when we take the famous cypress-lined avenue to the hamlet of Bolgheri. The straight, 5-kilometer stretch of road is flanked by more than 2400 cypress trees, making it the longest of its type in Italy!
Bolgheri, though it may be one of the smallest villages you will ever see, has outstanding wine shops and restaurants. Enjoy a little shopping or a stroll in the charming surroundings, then have lunch. We can make a reservation for you.
After lunch, a short drive will take us to the seaside for pictures of the varied and unique coastline, and of course we’ll stop for some gelato!
The day ends with a scenic drive up the coast
back to port. A relaxing day, off the beaten path away from big crowds and
noise of the city.
