Features of our Authentic Umbria day trip (Spoleto, Montefalco, and Bevagna) from Rome:
Set in the foothills of Italy's Appenine Mountains, Spoleto is a picturesque hilltop town that captivates visitors with its artistic and architectural heritage. Dating back to very ancient times, the original Umbri tribes built settlements here back in the 5th Century BCE. The town today is rich with a diversity of landmarks, which include:
Spoleto's annual Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) celebrates a fusion of international art, music, and culture, attracting renowned artists and performers from around the globe. With its charming cobblestone streets, inviting piazzas, and the usual assortment of delightful churches and palazzi (palatial buildings), Spoleto offers visitors an enchanting blend of tradition and modernity.
Known as the "Balcony of Umbria" thanks to its panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, Montefalco exudes timeless beauty. The town's meandering streets in brick and stone lead you through a wonderland of Medieval buildings adorned with potted plants and cheery flowers. In the former Church of San Francesco, you can admire an important cycle of frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli. Montefalco is also celebrated for Sagrantino, a highly tannic, ruby-red wine of excellent quality that enthusiasts will not want to miss. (Wine tastings are optional and should be planned in advance. Please contact us for details.)
Perhaps one of the most unique villages in the area, Bevagna bears the prestigious designation as one of the "borghi più belli d'Italia". Its main piazza, Piazza Silvestri, is resplendent with spare but beautiful architecture, an ensemble of structures that provides a tidy framework for the piazza's single, simple fountain. Around every corner of this village, pieces of history seem to sprout. In addition to Romanesque churches and Roman ruins, the old public washhouse along the river recalls a bygone era, as does the bridge in red brick sitting on handsome arches.
The history of Bevagna is intimately connected with St. Francis of Assisi; the legendary story of the friar preaching to the birds is said to have taken place just outside the hamlet's Medieval walls, which are still standing. Today, the village is extremely proud of its distinctive artisan products that have been produced here for many moons; namely, silk, beeswax candles, and paper handmade from hemp.
