Our Exclusive Best of Rome & Vatican Museums is designed for those who wish to enjoy a complete overview of Rome on a private shore excursion from the port of Civitavecchia. You’ll be able to go where buses are not permitted, enabling you to see more, walk less and capture the best of The Eternal City and the Vatican museums.
Features of this day trip to Rome & the Vatican:
This excursion starts at the Vatican after an 80-minute drive from the pier. Explore the richest storehouse of art in the entire world: the Vatican Museums, culminating with the Sistine Chapel. Painted by Michelangelo in the early 16th century, the Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes (best known for the iconic Creation of Adam) are a priceless collection of masterpieces.
Enter the expanse of St. Peter's Square through Bernini's elegant colonnades into St. Peter’s Basilica, Christendom's largest church. Resting on 800 pillars and able to hold over 60,000 worshippers, the church houses a mind-boggling quantity of artworks of every type imaginable. most notably the Pieta, Michelangelo's magnum opus sculpted in marble.
Our tour of Rome proceeds to Piazza Venezia, known for the Victor Emmanuel Monument, a gigantic complex of white marble sometimes called the "wedding cake”, and for the building that was Mussolini's headquarters, where he gave many of his legendary speeches from the balcony facing the piazza.
Climb the graceful steps of the Capitoline Hill, marvel at the symmetrical beauty of the piazza restyled by Michelangelo, and then enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Roman Forum. From this vantage point, you’ll get an excellent view of the Temple of Saturn and the Rostrum where Mark Anthony made his impassioned speech over the body of Julius Cesar.
At Trevi Fountain, you’ll get an eyeful of Baroque goodness. Remember to throw a coin over your shoulder to ensure your return to Rome!
After the sweeping Spanish Steps and Rome’s most sophisticated shopping street, you’ll walk through Piazza Navona — and do not forget to try the chocolate tartufo gelato!
At the Pantheon, you’ll see the handsome coffered dome and immense oculus, feats of ancient Roman engineering still there after almost 2000 years.
Last stop will be in the most fascinating monument in Rome, a place where 50.000 people watched cruel battles between gladiators and wild beasts: the Colosseum. After a quick look at the stately Arch of Constantine, we’ll head back to port.
