Duration : 8 Hours
Our private tour to Antibes, Cagnes sur Mer & St. Paul de Vence gives you a mix of popular and off-the-beaten-path places on the French Riviera. Ideal for lovers of art.
Start from the port of Villefranche, Cannes, Monaco or Antibes, or from lodgings in Nice.
Features of this day trip to Antibes, Cagnes sur Mer & St. Paul de Vence:
Antibes is just about as charming and Provençal as it gets, and it’s not nearly as busy as Cannes or Nice. You will love the cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured buildings with shutters painted in those vibrant hues that Provence is known for.
There are many points of interest in Antibes, Fort Carré being chief among them. The 16th Century fort is in excellent condition. James Bond fans may remember it as the villain’s lair in Never Say Never Again.
Foodies will find themselves skipping and leaping through the Provençal market (6am–1pm every day June–September: every day except Monday during off season) and perhaps paralyzed by the zillions of choices in the cheese shops.
Art is alive and well in Antibes, and in the past it has inspired a great many artists, most notably Monet and Picasso. The Picasso museum contains over 250 of his works. For more contemporary, sculptural art check out Nomade on the Sainte Jaume bastion.
If you don’t want to be stuck inside a gallery take the artists’ walk. Placards are situated along the route in places where the artists sat to paint, showing the works that were created there. It’s a great way to tour the city.
CAGNES SUR MER
Home to painter Renoir at the end of his life and popular among artists in the early 20th Century, Cagnes sur Mer is really off the beaten path. The historic Medieval center, Haut-de-Cagnes, has a quiet village feel. Its maze of narrow streets and hidden piazzas is very pleasant to stroll. Great pictures of the coastline can be taken from just about everywhere.
In the old quarter, you will also find Chateau Grimaldi, a 14th Century castle and residence of Monaco’s royal family (until the French Revolution).
The home where Renoir lived out his days has been turned into the Musée Renoir, containing 14 of his paintings plus sculptures and personal effects.
ST. PAUL DE VENCE
The hilltop village of St Paul de Vence is one of the most visited in France. This perfect Medieval hamlet is like a living postcard. From the tiny streets paved with stones in whimsical designs to the unique pieces of art scattered all over to the galleries and boutiques. St. Paul will charm you with its mix of the Middle Ages and modern artistic flair.
You may want to take a little walk to the village cemetery where the painter Marc Chagall is buried. He lived here from 1966 to 1985, painting local landscapes.f
Contemporary art lovers will want to check out Foundation Maeght. With more than 13,000 pieces encompassing paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, it is France's most important private art foundation and among the world’s leading cultural institutions.
