Day 7 – Day Trip Pisa and Lucca
Today your driver will pick you up directly at your accommodation for a visit to the splendid maritime city of Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Field of Miracles. Next, your driver will take you to Lucca, one of the most famous and glorious walled cities of Italy. Lucca was founded by the Etruscans but actually its origins are far more remote. In 180 BC the town became a Roman colony and from this period it has retained the rectangular grid of the Roman street plan.
Lucca is a rather small town but there are many interesting places to visit here: the Romanesque cathedral of San Martino, the church of San Michele, the Basilica of San Frediano with its exquisite mosaics, and the birthplace of the composer Puccini whose house is now a small museum. The more energetic of you can also rent bikes to do a Wall Bike Tour along the city walls. If there is enough time, your driver can take you to visit one of the magnificent villas at the outskirts of the city. Years ago Lucca’s most illustrious families and foreign residents had their summer homes in this area. The beautiful gardens of Villa Mansi built by the architect F. Juvarra are worth a visit as is Villa Torrigiani with its luxurious apartments and grounds.
Day 8 – Transfer to Rome and stop in Siena
One of Italy's most enchanting towns, Siena was a proud, wealthy, and warlike independent city-state during the Middle Ages, until its final defeat by Florence. Its medieval centre is full of majestic Gothic buildings such as Palazzo Pubblico in Piazza del Campo, Siena's main square. Twice a year the Sienese celebrate their rich medieval heritage with a horse race called the Palio, which attracts visitors and spectators from around the world. Spend a few hours exploring the town and perhaps the Duomo. The cathedral's green, pink and white marble exterior is surpassed only by the exquisite black and white marble geometric patterns and the inlaid marble mosaic floor found inside. This was the first European city to ban traffic from its main square in 1966. Sit down and, while sipping a cup of coffee, enjoy the stunning view.
