Arguably the best. Overlooks the Spanish Steps, though from some aspects it can be an inconvenient location. If you have the money for a front room it can be the most romantic spot in the city. Also a most expensive though delightful roof garden restaurant. The top (sixth) floor dining room tables overlook the Vatican with the domes of the Pantheon and St. Peter's quite visible; a special place for a special dinner.

EXCELSIOR *****
Via Veneto n. 125, ITL 450,000 - 774,000, phone 39-06-47081 fax 39-06-4826205. Used to be the best. Recently renovated. Headquarters of the Gestapo during war. Great location on Via Veneto. Now a Westin affiliate. Some evidence it is becoming less popular, and obtaining much of its business from groups and cruises.

DE RUSSIE *****
Just at the corner of Via del Babuino and the Piazza del Popolo. Built in the early 18th C by Valadier, the hotel has been closed for years. Now operated by Rocco Forte International after an extensive remodelling. Prices range from ITL 590,000 for a single to ITL 3,200,000 for the suite with terrace overlooking the Piazza. ST. REGIS GRAND *****
(and odd location, fairly near the main train station (Stazione Termini), Via Vittorio Orlando n. 3 - ITL 600,000 + ('97) phone 39-06-47091 fax 39-06-4747307. Also arguably the best. Excellent. Location satisfactory, but not great. Underwent a thorough renovation in 1999.

EDEN *****
was entirely renovated in '94 and is called by some the "current" leader in the city. Celebs include the Spice Girls and James Bond (Pierce Brosnan). Good location just off the top of the Via Veneto at Via Ludovisi n. 49, phone 39-06-478121 fax 39-06-4821584; rates ITL790,000 up.

HILTON *****
is located close the Vatican area in the residential quarter of Montemario. The deluxe 5-star Hilton offers luxurious bedrooms and suite featuring panoramic views, terraces, and marble bathrooms.
