DESCRIPTION:
Thanks to the A29 heading out of Palermo, Sicily's west is now more integrated with the rest of the island than ever Traditionally poor it's economy depends on fishing, smallscale farming and now tourism.
This area has been influenced by Arabs and Phoenician culture rather then Greek and Norman of elsewhere Sicly.
This area however is more famous for it's reputation of Mafia activity. You will be driving past 1993 Mafia car bombing of heroic Magistate Giovanni Falcone and escort , now a monument area. The area you will be driving by is called golfo di Castellamare , a stretch of 40 km without industrail devolopment, the gulf offers empty beaches and small villages.
In particular the coastline between the tuna fishing village Scopello and resort SanVito Lo Capo embraces a big nature reserve called Zingaro where tracking routes are available to be discovered.
Arrive in Segesta, set in the vegetation covering one of the many heights south west of Palermo, the mass of splendid temple rises as one of the most important and best preserved monuments to have survived from antiquity to present day dating back to 430 BC.
Continue to Marsala famous around the world for the salt production and dessert wine that carries the towns name. Invention of a noble englishman in 1770, he realized that this wine could travel long without going off if fortified with alcohol.
Here you will have a chance to visit the oldest wine makers of the area: Cantine Pellegrino.
After wine tasting you will stroll through the ancient village visiting the area where Garibaldi, unifier of Italy landed.
Try not to forget Marsala is the closest city to North Africa, only 150 Km separate each other.
Proceed to the walled mountain town of Erice 800 m above sea level. Settled by the Elymians and retained an important religious site associated with Goddess of fertility.
From this incredible medieval village it is possible to enjoy the view of the bay of Trapani , marble quarries and salt makers.
Erice is a small town with a population of a few hundred that multiplies during summer periods.
Driving back to Palermo visit the Gulf of Castellamare.
