| San Giovanni Laterno |
The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is the cathedral of Rome's diocese. The facade, interior chapels and ceilings are among the most important and appealing of the many wonderful churches in the city. The Pope frequently celebrates mass here on holidays. |

| The building next door was the original home to Popes before their self imposed exile to France in the 1300's. The Place of Holy Steps, one of the holiest places in Christendom, is directly across the way. It's said that Constantine's mother brought them from Jerusalem in the year 326. Pilgrims come here to climb the wooden-covered steps on their knees. |
