Rome, The Basics

According to legend, the city of Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of Mars, on April 21, 753 BC.

The young boys were abandoned in the hills that overlook today’s city, where they were suckled by a she-wolf. Romulus was crowned the first King and named the original hill top area Palatine after himself.

The famous “seven hills” surrounding the area continue to be an important part of Rome, as does the she-wolf who is the city’s symbol.
